Gout is a medical condition that is a form of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid crystals in joints, particularly in the feet. People who develop gout typically have a problem breaking down the uric acid they ingest, or their bodies produce too much of it. An excess of uric acid can cause several complications including arthritis flare-ups, kidney stones, and the blocking of tubules in the kidney that work to filter substances. Approximately 6 million people in America are inflicted with gout and the number is steadily increasing. Fortunately, there are a few ways to minimize the symptoms associated with the problem.
Symptoms
Attacks of gout are characterized by a sudden onset of acute pain in a joint area followed by swelling, red discoloration and warm sensations. The most common area affected is the base of the big toe, though just about any joint can be targeted. The attacks can take anywhere from a few hours to a few days to subside.
If you believe you are suffering from gout, obtaining a clinical diagnosis is extremely important. A doctor can test for gout in several ways. The most common method is removing fluid from a joint to analyze microscopically. Blood tests and radiographs can also be run to diagnose the condition. If the result is a positive diagnosis, the doctor will determine the severity of the condition and prescribe appropriate treatment(s).
Treatment
Medication is typically the first step in treating gout. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids are considered typical drugs for the treatment of gout symptoms. If medication is insufficient in eliminating the symptoms, a doctor might recommend surgery, although this is generally considered a last resort.
There is much you can do in terms of home treatment and remedy to reduce the occurrence and severity of gouty arthritis. Maintaining adequate hydration is key to preventing such attacks from occurring in the first place. Diet is also a huge factor in living with gouty arthritis. Several other tips that can help:
- Isolate and elevate the affected joint area
- Utilize ice packs on the area
- Supplement with omega fatty acids and chondroprotectants
- Drink cherry juice
- Maintain a healthy body weight
- Avoid drinking alcoholic beverages
Conclusion
Gout can be a difficult and painful condition to live with. Fortunately, an abundance of medicines and remedies are readily available to help treat and prevent the condition. A good diet is an easy first step to take to reduce the prevalence of acute gout attacks and maintain an overall healthier lifestyle.
